Your First Visit

What to expect at your first appointment

Your first visit is designed to give your practitioner a complete picture of your health history, current concerns, and goals so we can begin tailoring a care plan that meets you where you are.

Here’s what will happen:

1

Before your appointment

To help your visit start smoothly and comfortably:

  • Complete your new patient paperwork online before you arrive
  • There is no need to wear special or loose clothing; you will be guided to disrobe to your comfort level and will be fully covered and draped appropriately during treatment
  • Eat a light meal and drink water before your visit (this helps prevent lightheadedness)
  • Bring a list of medications, supplements, and relevant medical records if available

2

Intake and assessment

Your practitioner will begin with a thoughtful, thorough intake designed to understand both your current concerns and the broader patterns affecting your health.

This includes a detailed discussion of:

  • Your health history and current symptoms
  • Reproductive history and reproductive hormone patterns, when relevant
  • Menstrual cycle history, fertility history, pregnancy history, or postpartum concerns
  • Prior treatments and responses
  • Sleep, digestion, stress, activity, and lifestyle factors

When applicable, we also review:

  • Laboratory results and imaging related to reproductive or hormonal health
  • IVF or fertility treatment calendars, medication timelines, and clinic protocols
  • Prior IUI or IVF cycles, outcomes, and response patterns

3

Traditional diagnostics

Depending on your needs, your practitioner may use one or more of the following traditional assessment tools:

  • Pulse evaluation to assess patterns of circulation, balance, and organ systems
  • Tongue observation for insight into systemic balance and circulation

These assessments are part of traditional East Asian medicine diagnostics and are combined with your history and clinical presentation.

4

Acupuncture treatment

Once the assessment is complete:

  • You will be comfortably positioned on the treatment table
  • Fine, sterile, single-use acupuncture needles will be gently placed
  • Needles typically remain in place for 20–40 minutes

Most people experience minimal discomfort during needle insertion, and many find acupuncture deeply relaxing. Some patients feel a sense of warmth, heaviness, tingling, or calm during and after treatment.

Your practitioner will check in with you throughout to ensure comfort.

5

After your session

After treatment:

  • You are welcome to take your time getting up and return to your day
  • Many people feel relaxed or calm, while others feel more energized or clear-headed
  • Mild soreness or tenderness is possible but usually resolves within 24 hours

Your practitioner will discuss a recommended follow-up plan and may offer guidance on timing for your next visit.

Common questions about your first visit

You may wonder what acupuncture feels like, how long appointments take, or when to schedule your next session. For more detailed answers to common questions—like sensations you might experience during treatment or what follow-up visits are like—please visit our FAQ section or ask your practitioner at the end of your appointment.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very fine, and most people experience little to no discomfort. Sensations can include warmth, heaviness, tingling, or a dull ache at certain points, which is normal. Your practitioner will check in with you throughout treatment to ensure comfort.

Initial visits typically last 75–90 minutes, allowing time for a thorough intake, assessment, and treatment. Follow-up visits are usually shorter.

There is no need to wear loose or special clothing. Most patients will be asked to disrobe to their comfort level and will be fully covered and draped appropriately on the treatment table. This allows access to acupuncture points while maintaining privacy and comfort at all times.

Yes. We recommend eating a light meal or snack within a few hours of your visit and staying hydrated. This helps prevent lightheadedness during or after treatment.

Many people feel relaxed or calm after treatment, while others feel more energized or clear-headed. Mild soreness or fatigue can occur and typically resolves within 24 hours.

Some patients notice changes after the first visit, while others experience more gradual improvement. Response depends on your condition, history, and treatment goals. Your practitioner will discuss what to expect based on your situation.

How often should I come in at the beginning?

Frequency depends on your symptoms and goals. Many patients begin with weekly visits, then adjust as symptoms improve or treatment phases change.

Yes. When relevant, we review laboratory results, imaging, and medical records. For fertility patients, this may include hormone panels, ultrasound reports, and IVF or IUI treatment calendars.

Yes. Many patients receive acupuncture alongside fertility treatment. Care is timed around stimulation, retrieval, transfer, and recovery, and coordinated with clinic protocols when possible.

No. Many patients begin acupuncture based on symptoms alone. If a diagnosis is present, it can help guide care, but it is not required.

No. Acupuncture is supportive care and does not replace medical evaluation or treatment. We view care as complementary and work alongside medical providers when appropriate.
